Visual Screening Approaches: Promising Alternative Screening Strategies Cervical Cancer Prevention

چکیده

Given the challenges of implementing high-quality cervical cancer prevention services, especially in developing countries, there is considerable interest in exploring the accuracy and acceptability of visual approaches to detect precursor cervical disease and/or cancer. There are several types of visual screening. Early studies used visual inspection, which involved simply looking at the cervix with the unaided eye for any signs of early cancer. Also known as “downstaging,” this approach was not accurate in identifying precursor lesions or cancer. Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) has been shown to be a more promising screening approach for identifying women with high-grade precancerous lesions. VIA: An Overview

Evidence-based, alternative cervical cancer screening approaches in low-resource settings.

Cervical cancer kills approximately 270,000 women worldwide each year, with nearly 85% of those deaths occurring in resource-poor settings.1 Use of the Pap smear for routine screening of women has resulted in a dramatic decline in cervical cancer deaths over the past four decades in wealthier countries. A key reason for continuing high mortality in the developing world is the shortage of effici...

Cervical Cancer Screening in Developing Countries: Using Visual Inspection Methods.

BACKGROUND Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide. Most diagnoses occur in developing countries where cases are detected in later stages with poorer prognoses. Cervical cancer is a preventable disease; however, most women in developing and resource-limited countries do not have the access to the same methods of cervical cancer screening as women in developed coun...

Prospects for controlling cervical cancer at the turn of the century.

Cervical cancer morbidity and mortality have decreased substantially during the last 50 years mostly due to successful organized or opportunistic screening with Pap cytology in high and middle income countries. In many low income countries Pap cytology screening is yet to be effectively implemented or has failed to reduce cervical cancer rates to an appreciable extent. The fact that infection w...

Human papillomavirus infection (HPV) & screening strategies for cervical cancer.

The incidence of cervical cancer is declining slowly necessitating concerted and organized control measures. Control through primary prevention has become a distinct reality though a prophylactic vaccine, which may take quite some time for its widespread use. Thus control of cervical cancer through secondary preventive measures is the only viable solution now. While high quality cytology screen...

Cervical cancer screening in low- and middle-income countries.

Cervical cancer is a leading cause of death among women in the developing world. Conventional cytology-based cervical cancer screening programs have been largely ineffectual at reducing the cervical cancer burden in low-resource settings. In response, alternative strategies have been tested, such as visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) screening and human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA-based test...
